Finding the right dishwasher tablets can be tricky, particularly when there are so many available. Our team put a selection of the best dishwasher tablets to the test, from well-known brands like Fairy to supermarket own-brands and those with eco credentials, including Ecover.

Looking to replace your current dishwasher or buy a brand-new one for your home? Using results from our survey and expert advice, our guide to the best dishwashers will help you find the best one for your home.

Across the five-day testing period, everything came out gleaming and spotless with only the exception some stubborn sauce in a pan. Overall, this is one of the new guard of dishwasher tablets and with good eco credentials, Smol really impressed.

The tablets stripped dishwasher contents of all food remnants during testing and performed particularly well on glasses, leaving them super shiny. Their citrus smell is fresh and at least 50 per cent naturally derived.

The only downside was that each tablet comes individually wrapped. Although these casings are PET 5 recyclable, it felt unnecessary. However, when it came to performance, even the dishwasher seemed cleaner, presumably thanks in part to the tablets having salt and rinse aid built in. If not for the wrappings and some remnants left during testing across multiple dishwasher models, these tablets would have got 10/10.

Each tablet is wrapped in water soluble film that dissolves quickly in the warm water of your dishwasher and although they smell odd, the tablets deliver a brilliantly clean, unscented dishwasher load. Everything else is plastic-free and recyclable.

At the bottom of your dishwasher is an element that heats up water from your home supply, to between 30-60 degrees centigrade. Dishwasher tablets get released into this warmed water during a wash cycle and dissolve thanks to the combined heat and washing motion of the water being pumped around your dirty items.

The little detergent doors in dishwashers open at an optimum time during a wash cycle to maximise the effectiveness of both dishwasher tablets and the dishwasher cycle. If your dishwasher tablet is not dissolving, this could be for a number of reasons.

If your knowledge of dish washing and appliances is pretty standard, then you probably think that choosing to use a traditional liquid dish detergent or a tablet is simply a matter of personal preference. According to some experts, though, there may actually be a superior option. As another Apartment Therapy article points out, tablets tend to dissolve gradually throughout the rinse cycle of a dishwasher, while liquids and gels get washed away as soon as the appliance fills with water.

Our ALL-IN-ONE dishwasher tablets unleash the power of biodegradable ingredients to leave your dishes squeaky clean. They already contain rinse aid and salt action so you just have to pop the tablet in and run the machine.

Please remove wrapper and place one tablet in dispenser. Do not place the tablet into the cutlery basket. If hard water add normal dishwasher salt. Run the machine on eco-mode for sparkling results. Only place dishwasher safe material in your dishwasher - no wood, silver, aluminium, copper, hand-painted ceramics, antiques and crystal. If in doubt, wash item by hand with Ecover washing-up liquid.

A natural choice for washing dishes. Beyond Auto Dish Tabs are formulated with high-performance plant-derived and mineral-based ingredient technology. Including a built-in rinse-aid, these eco-friendly detergent tablets are designed to effectively clean in short dishwasher cycles, so you can save water and still enjoy great results with our earth-conscious design.

The really cheap basics tablets only seemed to work if I did a lot of soaking first and was very careful about not overloading the dishwasher. I can't be bothered with that. Not sure about the own brand all-in-ones tablets. My current tactic is to wait till the branded ones are on offer (one brand at least nearly always is, and get those).

I reckon a lot of it depends on how good your dishwasher itself is. My old dishwasher did 'need' decent dishwasher tablets to get things properly clean, but my new one gets things pretty clean even with just water (have forgotten to put a tablet in once or twice!) I use Aldi ones and they leave everything really sparkling.

I reckon it depends on whether you live in a hard or soft water area. When I lived in the south in a hard water area, only the most expensive tablets got stuff clean. Now I'm in the north and have soft water, I have a knackered old dishwasher, use the cheapest basic tablets and have sparkly dishes.

I live in the south east - very hard water. Our dishwasher is new. We have not noticed a difference between the Finish tablets supplied with the machine, and the Wilkinsons 3-in-1 tablets. We have also put salt and rinse aid in as per instructions with the machine. We have never had a dishwasher before to compare it to but everything seems to be perfectly clean and clear.

We've only had a dishwasher for about a month. We had some free Finish tablets with the dishwasher and found them useless as they don't dissolve properly so I bought some Fairy ones and they are great (were on special offer) but I am all for trying the cheaper brands after my experience with Finish. 041b061a72
