The really cheap basics tablets only seemed to work if I did a lot of soaking first and was very careful about not overloading the dishwasher. I reckon a lot of it depends on how good your dishwasher itself is. My old dishwasher did 'need' decent dishwasher tablets to get things properly clean, but my new one gets things pretty clean even with just water (have forgotten to put a tablet in once or twice!) I reckon it depends on whether you live in a hard or soft water area. When I lived in the south in a hard water area, only the most expensive tablets got stuff clean. Now I'm in the north and have soft water, I have a knackered old dishwasher, use the cheapest basic tablets and have sparkly dishes.
